Why new mortar should be softer than the brick
In a masonry wall, the mortar is the part meant to be sacrificed. When the wall moves or water passes through it, the joint should crack or weather before the brick does, because a joint is easy to repoint and a brick is not. That only works if the mortar is weaker than the brick around it.
ASTM C270 sets out mortar types by their properties, and choosing one means matching the brick in the wall instead of grabbing the strongest bag on the shelf. Hard, cement-rich mortar packed around soft brick sends the movement into the brick faces, which then crack and shed. So the brick gets looked at first, and the mortar is chosen after.
The stepped brick above the damper
Above the damper, the fireplace narrows into the flue through a smoke chamber, and that narrowing can be built by stepping bricks inward course by course. Left rough, those steps catch smoke, collect soot and give heat a jagged surface to work on. The mortar there takes more heat than anywhere in the chimney except the firebox.
We look at the chamber from below with a light, noting missing mortar, open joints and bare brick. A chamber that needs work gets its own line, because repairing it means working overhead through the damper opening, which is slow and careful work.
A masonry flue that now vents a gas appliance
Chimneys built for wood fires sometimes end up venting a gas appliance, and that change matters to the flue. Gas exhaust is cooler and wetter than wood smoke. In a large clay flue it can cool enough to condense, and the water it drops washes out mortar and stains the brick.
A lined flue matched to the connected appliance is what the residential code expects, and the appliance's own instructions spell out what that lining must be. Where an existing flue does not fit the appliance, we propose a liner listed to UL 1777 and sized to the appliance it serves.
