Pre-hydrating mortar for repointing

Repointing mortar is mixed differently from laying mortar. BIA's note describes the steps: the dry materials are mixed, then just enough water is added to make a damp mix that holds its shape when squeezed into a ball. The mix stands for a period, and then more water is added to reach a working consistency that is still drier than the mortar used to lay brick. The stiffer mix packs into the joint more firmly and shrinks less as it cures.

The result is joints that fill all the way back, with less chance of a fine crack opening along their edges. The mix is used within its working time, and anything that has started to set is thrown out rather than retempered.

Stair-step cracks along the bed and head joints

Zigzag cracks that climb a chimney along the horizontal bed joints and the short vertical head joints are movement cracks. The mortar gave way along its weakest path, which is the pattern a sound wall is designed to allow. The cause can be settlement, thermal movement, or pressure from something inside the wall such as rusting steel.

Once the cause is dealt with and the movement has stopped, the cracked joints are raked out along their whole length and repointed. A crack filled from the surface without raking stays a crack behind a thin skin of new mortar, and it reopens.

Stopping the water before the mortar work

Before any mortar is mixed, the question is how water reached the damage, because a repair that leaves the water path open will be repeated. Rain gets into a chimney above the roof at a short list of places: the crown and its seal around the flue tile, a missing or damaged cap, the shoulders, open joints on the most exposed face, and the flashing.
