Firebox depth and wall thickness
The firebox of a masonry fireplace is at least 20 inches deep under the code. Its back and side walls are 8 inches of solid masonry including a 2-inch firebrick lining, or 10 inches where there is no lining. Firebrick meets ASTM C27 or C1261, and the joints between the bricks, laid in medium-duty refractory mortar, stay no wider than a quarter inch. Those numbers are what keep the heat of the fire inside the masonry and away from the framing that sits a couple of inches beyond it. We lay the firebox before the smoke chamber, and the inspector can see the lining thickness at the opening.
Rumford fireboxes, tall and shallow
A Rumford fireplace has a tall opening, a shallow firebox and angled side walls that throw heat into the room. The code makes room for it: a Rumford firebox may be as shallow as 12 inches, as long as it meets the other proportions the code sets for the design, including a throat of at least one-twentieth of the opening's cross-sectional area. A Rumford is a masonry build, and it is laid out from those proportions rather than from a standard firebox plan.
If you like the look, we draw it as a separate option. Its tall opening can push the opening area past 6 square feet, which enlarges the required hearth extension.
What can cover the face of the unit
The face of a factory-built fireplace, the metal around the opening, gets hot, and the manual limits what can cover it. It calls for noncombustible materials such as tile, stone or brick veneer, set with an adhesive rated for the temperature the manual names, and it shows where the facing has to stop short of the opening or the grilles. Combustible board and wood trim stay outside that zone.
We give you the manual's facing rules with the plan, so the tile or stone you choose fits them before it is bought. Grout and setting materials follow the same temperature rule.

New fireplace questions from San Jose

Only if the new unit's manual lists that pipe. If it does not, the chimney is replaced with the system the new unit was tested with.
Can a new fireplace go on an upper floor?
Yes for a factory-built unit, because it sits on a framed floor and its chimney runs up from there, as long as the floor framing is sized for the load. A masonry fireplace needs a footing at the ground, so it has to rise from the lowest level.
