When the ignition module locks out
An ignition module gives the pilot a set number of tries, or a set time, to light and prove its flame. If it fails, the module shuts the gas off and some models lock out until they are reset by switching power off and on, as the manual describes. A single lockout after a long idle period can be air in the line or dust in the pilot. Repeated lockouts are a fault, and the flow chart takes us through power, spark, gas at the pilot and flame sensing in order to find it before the module itself is suspected.
Push-button igniters on standing pilots
Standing-pilot units light with a piezo igniter, a spring-loaded crystal that makes a spark when you press the button. It needs no battery and has few parts, so the faults are simple: a wire that has slipped off the electrode, an electrode that has moved away from the pilot hood, or a crystal that has worn out. The maker's chart says to check for a spark at the electrode and the pilot.
If the wire is sound and there is no spark, the fix is the igniter or the pilot assembly, whichever carries the failed part on that model. It is a small repair once the fault is found.
Natural gas and propane are not interchangeable
The rating plate names the gas a fireplace was built for, and the orifices, the valve regulator and the pilot are sized for it. A propane unit connected to natural gas burns weak and lazy, and a natural gas unit fed propane can overfire badly. Switching fuels takes the maker's conversion kit for that model, which swaps the orifices and sets the regulator, and the kit instructions say how the unit is labeled afterward.
We confirm the gas at the plate and at the supply before any other diagnosis. An orifice drilled out by hand is not a conversion. Neither is a regulator spring from another model.
