The drip groove under the overhang
Water running off the edge of a crown wants to curl back along the underside and run down the brick face. A drip groove, a small channel cast into the underside of the overhang, breaks that film of water so it drops clear of the chimney.
The groove sits near the outer edge of the overhang, and it has to run continuously around all four sides. A groove that stops short at a corner lets water find its way around the end. A drip edge is one of the crown requirements in R1003.9.1, and the groove is how a cast crown provides it.
Giving a crown enough slope
Slope is what makes a crown shed water, which is why the residential code's crown section asks for it, and a flat top defeats that purpose. Water that sits on it soaks into the concrete, finds every hairline crack, and carries dirt and dissolved salts into the pores.
The slope runs from the flue tiles down to the outer edge on every side, steep enough that water moves off promptly without pooling at the tile. Where two or more flues share the crown, the surface between them slopes away as well, so no low spot is left to hold water. The slope is checked with a level before the concrete sets.
Crowns around a stainless liner top plate
After a flue is relined with a stainless steel liner, a top plate sits on the crown and the liner passes through it. The plate is sealed to the crown so water cannot run down between the old flue tile and the new liner.
Repairing the crown on a relined chimney means taking that plate off, repairing or recasting the crown, and resealing the plate to the finished surface with a sealant rated for the job. The liner itself is left undisturbed. If the plate is corroded or the seal has failed repeatedly, that becomes a separate line.
