Wrapping a liner in insulating blanket
Blanket insulation for a liner is a foil-faced ceramic fiber sheet. It is laid out flat, the liner and its bottom fitting set on top, and the blanket wrapped around with overlapping seams taped with foil tape along their length. A wire mesh sleeve then goes over the wrapped liner to hold the blanket in place as it is lowered.
The wrap starts at the bottom fitting and stops a few inches below the crown, where the instructions leave room for the liner to grow with heat. The blanket adds thickness, so the flue has to be proved with the wrap included.
Where the wall opening for a stove goes
When a stove connects through the side of the chimney, the opening in the masonry has to hold the connector firmly and keep the required clearance to any wood around it. Liner makers also ask that the opening not be placed directly behind the appliance, so the connection can be reached for inspection and cleaning.
If an old opening sits at the wrong height for the new stove, too close to framing, or behind where the stove will stand, a new opening is made and the old one closed with masonry. That work is priced separately from the liner.
Letting the liner grow with heat
Stainless steel expands as it heats. A liner many feet long grows measurably during a hot fire and shrinks as it cools, and the installation has to allow for that movement. Flexible liner's corrugations take up much of it along the length.
At the top, the insulation wrap ends a short way under the crown, leaving the liner free to move within the top plate's clamp without tearing the wrap. At the bottom, the connection is supported but not locked so rigidly that expansion has nowhere to go. Those details come from the maker's instructions and are followed as written.
