Before a crown is coated, tape goes around each flue tile, set a little higher than the crown surface. The coating is brushed up to that line, over the tile-to-crown joint, and ends in a clean edge instead of a ragged smear.
What sits in the joint where the tile meets the crown matters more than the tape. The bond break the code asks for is a flexible, caulked joint that lets the tile expand as it heats while the concrete stays put. Rigid patching cement packed into it locks the tile to the crown, and the next fire cracks one or the other. An open joint at the tile is cleaned out and resealed with a flexible sealant before the coating goes on.
Setting a precast crown on a mortar bed
A precast crown arrives cured and is set on a bed of mortar on top of the chimney. BIA Technical Note 19B calls for a bond break between the brickwork and that setting bed, so the crown can move without cracking the brick, and for the joint at the flue liner to be primed, backed and sealed.
Precast crowns come with their overhang and drip groove formed in, which is one reason the same technical note rates them well. The limits are size, weight and access: the crown has to be lifted onto the roof and set level in one piece.

After a flue is relined with a stainless steel liner, a top plate sits on the crown and the liner passes through it. The plate is sealed to the crown so water cannot run down between the old flue tile and the new liner.
Repairing the crown on a relined chimney means taking that plate off, repairing or recasting the crown, and resealing the plate to the finished surface with a sealant rated for the job. The liner itself is left undisturbed. If the plate is corroded or the seal has failed repeatedly, that becomes a separate line.
