Siloxanes and clay brick

Siloxane molecules are larger than silanes, and they link chemically to the silica and alumina in fired brick and in mortar. In BIA's assessment they give good penetration and repellency and have worked well on certain brick walls, which is why the note suggests a siloxane, or a siloxane and silane blend, for exterior brick. Some siloxanes tolerate a slightly damp surface. The one we apply on chimneys is a modified siloxane, and its maker describes it reacting with the minerals in the masonry, in the presence of ultraviolet light and moisture, to form a water-repellent zone just below the face. Nearby glass needs protecting for the same chemical reason, since glass is mostly silica.

New masonry and the four-week wait

A freshly built or rebuilt section of chimney is full of water from its own mortar. The maker of the siloxane we apply asks for a minimum 28-day cure on new masonry before treatment. BIA suggests waiting longer still on new brickwork, at least a month after the building is closed in and preferably a year, so the salts carried out as that construction water dries, known as new building bloom, are not sealed under a coating. When the top of a chimney has been rebuilt, the repellent is scheduled after that cure, with the earliest date it can go on agreed in advance.

Temperature limits on the data sheet

Clear repellents cure through a chemical reaction, and heat and cold both change how that reaction goes. The product's directions set the window at 40 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit for both the surface and the air, holding for three hours after application, and BIA gives a similar typical range for brick coatings. A chimney face in full sun can run well above the air temperature, so on a hot day the work may be timed for the morning or started on the shaded faces first. The same timing keeps the product from flashing off before it has soaked in properly.

Waterproofing questions from Oceanway

Will waterproofing stop water coming into my fireplace?

Not if the water comes down the flue or through the crown. Those paths are closed with a cap or crown repair, and treatment of the brick faces comes afterward if it is still needed.

What if my chimney does not need treatment?
