Evidence on the smoke shelf
The smoke shelf is where a chimney keeps its records. Anything that falls down the flue lands there: nesting fiber and twigs, droppings, bits of shell, soil, leaves and pieces of a failing cap screen. Keeping the clean-out inside the chimney
Everything that comes out of a flue after an animal comes down through the firebox, so containment starts there. The opening is sealed with a panel or plastic sheeting taped to the fireplace face, with the vacuum hose passing through it. The hearth and the floor in front are covered, and furniture nearby is moved or draped.
With the room sealed off, the flue is brushed from above or below, and the debris drops to where the vacuum collects it. The seal comes down last, after the firebox and smoke shelf are cleaned, so you get the room back as it was.
Factory-built chimneys take listed parts
The metal chimney above a factory-built fireplace was tested and listed as a complete system, and its cap is one of the listed parts. Under the Florida Building Code, such a chimney is installed and finished off at the top exactly as its maker's instructions say (R1005.1), and decorative shrouds are not allowed there unless listed for that chimney (R1005.2).
So a generic masonry cap is not fitted to a factory-built flue, even if it seems to fit. When an animal has damaged or dislodged the cap on one, the replacement comes from the chimney's own maker, named by part and chimney model.
