Cutting out a single damaged brick
A brick that has lost its face can be replaced on its own when the bricks around it are sound. The mortar around it is cut out, the damaged unit broken out in pieces so its neighbors are not disturbed, and the cavity cleaned.
The new brick is buttered with mortar on its top, bottom and ends, slid in, and the joints packed and tooled. The hard part is the match: size, color and texture. A salvaged brick or a close modern match is chosen before the day, and you hear in advance how close the match is likely to be, so a lighter patch on an old face is not a surprise.
