Crown cracks come in three broad kinds. Hairline cracks are surface lines you can see but not fit a fingernail into. Open cracks have width and depth, and water pools in them. Through cracks run the full thickness of the slab, so a piece moves when pressed or water drains straight into the chimney.

Why a new crown does not go over a failed one
