Grading what is in the flue
Freedom from deposits is one of the three things NFPA 211 asks the yearly inspection to confirm, so the deposit is graded as well as noticed. Dry soot is normal after use. The hearth extension is the noncombustible floor in front of and beside the fireplace, and its size follows the size of the opening. For an opening smaller than 6 square feet the code asks for 16 inches in front and 8 inches to each side; at 6 square feet or more, 20 inches in front and 12 to each side (FBC R1001.10).
The inspection measures the opening and the extension, and checks the extension for cracks or loose tiles that could let an ember reach wood below. A short extension is recorded with the amount it falls short by. Raised hearths are measured the same way, at floor level in front.
