Skirt depth and the drip that clears the wall
The skirt is the part of the cover that turns down over the sides of the chase. It needs enough depth to cover the joint between the top of the siding and the framing, and enough to take fasteners below that joint.
At its bottom edge it ends in a drip: a small outward kick that throws water clear of the wall instead of letting it run back underneath. Fireplace manuals call for a turndown and drip edge on the chase top for exactly that reason. A skirt that stops short, or ends flush against the siding, leaves the top of the wall to take the water.
Folded, welded and sealed seams
One-piece chase tops have seams only at their corners, where the skirt folds down. A very large chase, or one with an unusual shape, may need two sheets joined across the top.
Every seam is a possible leak, and fireplace manuals call for caulking all seams on the chase top. Corner seams are folded so water runs over them rather than into them. Joints across the top are folded and locked or welded, then sealed, and placed where water runs across them rather than along them. Fewer seams in the flat means fewer places to fail, which is why we cut one sheet where the chase size allows.
Laying out a top for two pipes
When two pipes share a chase, the top needs two holes, two collars and a layout that lets water flow around both. Each pipe's center is measured from two fixed sides of the chase, because the old cover's holes may be off. The slope or cross-breaks are arranged so neither collar sits in a low spot between them. Spacing between the terminations themselves also matters, since smoke from one outlet can spill into another that sits too close. The fireplace manuals give that spacing, some as a minimum distance and a height difference, and we compare the pair on your roof against the numbers for your models.
