Pressing a round liner oval

A rectangular clay flue can be too narrow on one side for a round liner of the size the appliance needs. Flexible stainless liner can be pressed into an oval to fit, and liner makers allow it.

The catch is area. An oval has less cross-sectional area than the round liner it was made from, and the appliance sizing was based on the round figure. So after shaping, the oval's area is worked out again and checked against the appliance collar or the fireplace opening. If the oval comes up short, the answer is a larger starting diameter or tile removal, and never a smaller flue.

When the chimney's clearances cannot be confirmed

A liner's zero-clearance rating depends on its listing and, for some systems, on insulation. Liner makers say that if the chimney's own airspace to combustibles cannot be confirmed, the liner must be installed with an approved insulation wrap.

Clearances can be hard to confirm: the chimney sits behind drywall, the attic side is packed with insulation, or framing was built tight to the brick. In those cases the insulated system is what the listing requires. We say whether insulation is required for that reason or recommended for draft and condensation. The insulation also takes up room, which the flue proof has to allow for.

Sizing a liner for a gas appliance

Gas appliances are sized differently from wood. The flue for a gas appliance vented into masonry is sized from the venting tables in NFPA 54, the National Fuel Gas Code, and from the appliance's installation manual, and the Florida Building Code sends gas flue lining to its fuel gas chapter.

The tables account for the appliance's input, the height of the chimney and the length of any lateral run. Too large a liner lets the exhaust cool and condense; too small restricts it. When two gas appliances share a flue, the combined sizing rules apply, and we note which table was used. The appliance's rating plate gives the input figure the tables need.
