Taking down a stove connector pipe
The connector between a wood stove and the chimney collects deposit fast, because it is the first place the exhaust cools. It comes down in sections, each marked so it goes back in order, and is brushed over a drop cloth or outdoors.
Going back up, each joint is fastened, the crimped ends point toward the stove so condensate runs back into it, and the run keeps its rise toward the chimney. Protecting stone and tile hearths
Soot stains porous stone and grout quickly, and a dropped rod can chip a tile edge. Before the work starts, the hearth is covered with a heavy cloth over a pad, taped where it meets the firebox so nothing slides under.
Rods, brushes and bags rest on the cloth and stay off the floor. At the end the cloth is folded inward so the soot stays inside it, and the hearth is wiped down. If a stain or a chip was already there before the visit, it is pointed out at the start rather than discovered afterward. Raised hearths get a second cloth down the front edge, where rods tend to rest.
Getting a brush around an offset
Some flues change direction partway up, sloping sideways around a floor beam or a second fireplace. Stiff rods cannot turn that corner, so flexible rods carry the brush through the bend, and a sharp offset is worked from both ends so the brush meets in the middle.
The bend deserves a close look, since deposit settles on the low side of a sloped section and tile joints at a bend can open. The code allows a clay flue no more than 30 degrees from vertical (FBC R1003.12), and a steeper run than that goes on the record. An offset also catches falling debris at its low corner, which is cleared by hand from the smoke chamber side.
