Working the damper through its full travel
A damper has two jobs: open fully so smoke can leave, and close flat so room air cannot. The inspection works the handle through its whole travel and watches the plate. A plate that stops short of open chokes the fire; one that will not close leaks conditioned air up the flue on every idle day.
Rust scale on the frame, a bent plate, pivot wear or a handle that slips are all recorded. The handle positions for open and closed are shown to you. So is a damper missing altogether, which turns up in some fireplaces after an earlier repair took it out and nothing replaced it.
Flue area against an appliance connector
For a stove, furnace or other appliance, the flue it vents into may not be smaller in area than the connector feeding it (FBC R1003.14). The inspection reads the connector size and compares it with the flue or liner. Too small restricts the exhaust; much too large lets it slow and cool. For gas appliances, sizing comes from NFPA 54 and the appliance's installation manual instead.
When two appliances share one flue, each connection is checked, since the combination changes what the flue has to carry. The manual for each appliance is asked for at booking so the check has the right numbers.
Refractory panels in a factory-built firebox
Instead of firebrick, a factory-built fireplace lines its firebox with refractory panels. They crack with heat over time, and the maker's manual sets the limit for replacement, by the crack's width or by whether a piece has come loose. The inspection compares what it sees with that limit.
Panels that have crumbled at the edges, or that show the metal behind them, are marked urgent, since the steel shell of the firebox is not meant to take the fire directly. Replacement panels come from the maker's own parts list for that model, and each one is listed by its part name. Panels are checked with the unit cold and the grate out.
