Taking down a stove connector pipe

The connector between a wood stove and the chimney collects deposit fast, because it is the first place the exhaust cools. It comes down in sections, each marked so it goes back in order, and is brushed over a drop cloth or outdoors.

Going back up, each joint is fastened, the crimped ends point toward the stove so condensate runs back into it, and the run keeps its rise toward the chimney. Loose or rusted sections, and any seam that has opened, are listed as replacements. A connector that sags or leaks smoke into the room is not put back.

A flue that nothing uses anymore

When an appliance is removed, its flue can stay behind, open at the top and forgotten. Nests, leaves and fallen tile collect in it with nobody watching, and water entering at the top works on the masonry around it.
