Building the forms for a cast crown

A cast crown is shaped by its forms. Boards or form material are fixed around the top of the chimney, set out past each face by the planned overhang and level all the way round. A strip fixed to the underside of the form creates the drip groove.

Inside the forms, the top surface is shaped to slope from the flue tiles down to the edge on every side. The forms stay on until the concrete can hold its shape, and they come off without breaking the edge. The forms decide whether the finished crown sheds water or sits up there as a lump of concrete.

Reinforcement inside a cast crown

Concrete shrinks as it cures and moves with heat afterward, and without reinforcement those movements open cracks. BIA Technical Note 19B calls for adequate reinforcement in a cast cap to control cracking from shrinkage and thermal movement, with extra where the cap overhangs the face.

The reinforcement is placed within the thickness of the crown, clear of the brick below and the surface above, so concrete surrounds it on all sides. Where a crown will stay wet for long spells, the type of reinforcement is chosen with corrosion in mind. You are told what goes in before the pour.

Setting a precast crown on a mortar bed

A precast crown arrives cured and is set on a bed of mortar on top of the chimney. BIA Technical Note 19B calls for a bond break between the brickwork and that setting bed, so the crown can move without cracking the brick, and for the joint at the flue liner to be primed, backed and sealed.

Precast crowns come with their overhang and drip groove formed in, which is one reason the same technical note rates them well. The limits are size, weight and access: the crown has to be lifted onto the roof and set level in one piece.
