Rigid sections or flexible liner

Liners come in two forms. Rigid stainless sections join end to end into a smooth, round bore, and they suit a flue that runs straight and plumb from bottom to top. Flexible liner is corrugated, which lets it bend through offsets and absorb growth from heat along its length.

The choice follows the flue's shape. A straight flue can take either; a flue with offsets needs flexible liner or a rigid run with listed elbows where the offset allows. Both are listed systems, and each comes with its own joints, fittings and instructions that the installation follows.

Poured insulation around a liner

Instead of a blanket, some liner systems are insulated with a loose, lightweight mix poured into the space between the liner and the old flue walls. It fills irregular spaces that a blanket cannot, including gaps around offsets and oversized tile.

The mix needs the bottom of the space sealed first so it stays where it is poured, and it adds a break-in period to the first fires, set by the maker. Letting the liner grow with heat

Stainless steel expands as it heats. A liner many feet long grows measurably during a hot fire and shrinks as it cools, and the installation has to allow for that movement. Flexible liner's corrugations take up much of it along the length.

At the top, the insulation wrap ends a short way under the crown, leaving the liner free to move within the top plate's clamp without tearing the wrap. At the bottom, the connection is supported but not locked so rigidly that expansion has nowhere to go. Those details come from the maker's instructions and are followed as written.
