Storm collars and where the sealant goes

Where the sealant goes depends on the model, and its installation steps say so. One maker calls for waterproof caulk where the storm collar meets the pipe; another also seals the joint between the storm collar and the chase top. None of them fill the open ring around the pipe at the collar. After a new cover goes on, we fit a new storm collar or refit the old one if it is sound, and set it snug.
Screws through the skirt sides
Every screw that goes through the flat of a chase top is a hole in the part of the cover where water runs. Installation steps for these chimneys fasten the top through its sides instead.
We drive the fasteners through the skirt into the chase framing, below the joint the skirt protects, spaced closely enough to hold the edge flat in wind. The screws are in a metal compatible with the cover, with sealing washers where the maker calls for them. The flat of the new top stays unbroken except for the pipe collars, and the old screw holes in the framing are filled so the new screws bite fresh wood.
Laying out a top for two pipes
When two pipes share a chase, the top needs two holes, two collars and a layout that lets water flow around both. Each pipe's center is measured from two fixed sides of the chase, because the old cover's holes may be off. The slope or cross-breaks are arranged so neither collar sits in a low spot between them. Spacing between the terminations themselves also matters, since smoke from one outlet can spill into another that sits too close. The fireplace manuals give that spacing, some as a minimum distance and a height difference, and we compare the pair on your roof against the numbers for your models.

We measure on the roof ourselves. The cover has to fit over the finished siding and match the pipe positions exactly, and small errors leave gaps where water gets in.
Can you replace the cover while I am at work?
Not for the roof work, if we can reach the roof safely. Someone needs to be home if we have to read the fireplace model plate or look for water inside.
