The crown seal around the flue tile
The crown is the concrete, stone or metal top of a masonry chimney, and the code asks three things of it: a slope that sheds water, a drip edge, and a sealant-filled bond break where the flue tile passes through, following ASTM C1283 (FBC R1003.9.1).
The bond break matters because the tile heats and grows faster than the crown. Without a flexible joint, the tile pushes on the crown until one of them cracks. From the roof, the seal is checked for gaps, sealant gone hard, and cracks radiating from the tile corners, which are a sign it has already failed.
Wood trim and mantels near the opening
Wood around a fireplace opening has its own limits. The code sets how close combustible trim and a mantel may sit to the opening and, within a set distance, how far they may stick out for each inch they sit back from it (FBC R1001.11). Radiant heat can dry and darken nearby wood over the years.
The inspection measures what is there against those limits. A mantel added after the fireplace was built is worth measuring twice, since it came later than the design. Scorching, darkened paint or a surface too hot to touch after a fire are clues that trim sits too close even before the tape comes out.

With that, the installation can be checked against the right manual: the chimney sections and cap are the maker's listed parts, the clearances to framing are as stated, and nothing has been added that the listing does not allow. A missing or unreadable label is itself a finding, since the model sets every other check. Model numbers are written into the findings.
