The code makes room for it: a Rumford firebox may be as shallow as 12 inches, as long as it meets the other proportions the code sets for the design, including a throat of at least one-twentieth of the opening's cross-sectional area. A Rumford is a masonry build, and it is laid out from those proportions rather than from a standard firebox plan.

Taking out the old unit

Removing a failed factory-built fireplace is a job of its own. The facing comes off first, then the unit is disconnected from its chimney, unfastened from the framing and slid out in one piece where the framing allows.

When the chimney is being replaced too, it comes down section by section from inside, with its firestops and shield. The old framing is measured against the new unit's manual, and the opening is resized where the dimensions differ. Debris leaves the house bagged, and you know in advance what happens to the finished wall around the opening. The old unit's rating plate is kept with your paperwork.

Carrying the weight

Light as a factory-built fireplace is, the chimney, a stone hearth and the finish around the opening add up. The code requires any framing that supports a factory-built chimney to be designed for the added load.
