Band-mount caps for tiles with rough edges

Band-mount caps clamp around the outside of the flue tile instead of reaching inside it. A metal band or a set of screws draws the cap's base against the tile's outer faces. This style suits tiles whose inside edge is chipped or out of square, and tiles slightly larger than a slip-in model allows. It still needs the tile to stand clear of the crown by enough height to give the band something to grip.

We tighten the band evenly on every side, because uneven pressure on clay tile concentrates stress at one corner, and a cracked tile turns a cap job into a flue repair. The band's metal matches the cap's, so the two do not corrode against each other.

Metal chimneys take their maker's listed cap

A metal chimney that serves a factory-built fireplace was tested as a system, and its top cap was part of that test. The fireplace manual names the termination that belongs on it, by model.

A masonry-style cap clamped onto that pipe is outside the listing, and it can change how the chimney draws and how its layers stay cool. So when the cap on a metal chimney is damaged, the replacement comes from the chimney's maker for that model, ordered by the numbers on the fireplace plate. The framed box around such a chimney has its own sheet-metal top, which is a separate part with its own price.

Two caps or one cover for side-by-side flues

Two tiles standing next to each other can each take a single-flue cap, provided there is room for both hoods and both tiles stand clear of the crown. One outside-mount cover over both is the alternative. Separate caps keep each flue independent, so servicing one does not disturb the other, and they need less metal. One cover shields more of the crown and puts no fasteners into the tiles, but it needs sound concrete to anchor into.
