Taping the flue tile before a coating

Before a crown is coated, tape goes around each flue tile, set a little higher than the crown surface. The coating is brushed up to that line, over the tile-to-crown joint, and ends in a clean edge instead of a ragged smear.

What sits in the joint where the tile meets the crown matters more than the tape. The bond break the code asks for is a flexible, caulked joint that lets the tile expand as it heats while the concrete stays put. Rigid patching cement packed into it locks the tile to the crown, and the next fire cracks one or the other. An open joint at the tile is cleaned out and resealed with a flexible sealant before the coating goes on.

A flashing sheet under the crown

The Brick Industry Association's details put a sheet of flashing directly under a cast crown, running past the inside of the brick and turned up against the flue tile. The flashing catches any water that gets through the crown and sends it out as a drip beyond the face.

Technical Note 19B highly recommends flashing under cast-in-place caps and notes that it can double as the bond break between crown and brick. We include it where the chimney's construction allows it, and we say whether your crown gets one and why. The flashing metal is chosen to sit in mortar without corroding.

Why crowns are cast in concrete

Crowns are concrete elements, and they should be made from concrete: cement, sand and coarse aggregate in proportions made for strength and durability. Bricklaying mortar is a different material, designed to be weaker than the brick so joints fail first, which is the opposite of what a crown needs.

We use a concrete mix suited to a thin cast element with reinforcement, and we name it. Mortar washes built from leftover mortar at the end of a chimney job are one reason crowns crack early. The mix is placed in one pour so there are no cold joints across the top.
