The spark electrode and its cable
The spark that lights a pilot jumps a small gap between an electrode and a grounded point, and the gap is set by the maker. Too wide, and the spark weakens or jumps somewhere else. A cracked ceramic around the electrode lets the spark leak to the metal body, which shows as clicking with no light. The ignition cable runs close to hot parts, and a cable that has melted or buckled from heat is replaced and shielded where the manual says.
The gap, the ceramic and the cable all get checked before the module is blamed. Each of those has its own part number.
Burner ports and ember material
The burner is a pan or tube with rows of small ports, and the flame pattern depends on every one of them. Dust, fallen ember material and bits of broken log block ports and make the flame lopsided or uneven. Ember material is its own part: the manual says what kind, how much and where it goes, for example a thin layer over a specific area. Too much of it over the ports smothers the flame and can cause sooting. On service we lift the logs, vacuum the burner, clear the ports and relay the embers as the manual shows.
The screen in front of hot glass
The glass front of a gas fireplace gets hot enough to burn skin. Under the 2015 revisions of ANSI Z21.88 and Z21.50, units whose glass runs above a set temperature ship with a barrier, such as a mesh screen, in front of the glass. The manuals say the barrier shall be installed.
On older units built before that change, a barrier may be available from the maker as an accessory. We check that the screen is present, fastened as designed and undamaged, and replace a missing or bent one with the maker's part. Burns to children are the reason the rule exists.
