Left rough, those steps catch smoke, collect soot and give heat a jagged surface to work on. The mortar there takes more heat than anywhere in the chimney except the firebox.
We look at the chamber from below with a light, noting missing mortar, open joints and bare brick. A chamber that needs work gets its own line, because repairing it means working overhead through the damper opening, which is slow and careful work.
Chase covers on factory-built chimneys
On a factory-built fireplace, the flue is a listed metal chimney inside a framed chase, and the chase is topped with a sheet-metal cover. A cover that sits flat collects water, and a thin galvanized cover can rust through, letting water run down inside the chase onto the framing and the fireplace unit.
A sound replacement is made to measure, with a slope or cross-breaks so water runs off, a drip edge that clears the siding, and a collar and storm collar that fit the chimney pipe. The pipe itself stays the maker's listed part, so any work on it follows that maker's installation manual.
Chimneys that carry more than one flue
Some chimneys serve a fireplace and a second appliance, or two fireplaces, with a flue for each, and each flue has its own job. Smoke from one flue can be drawn down another when their tops sit at the same height and the wind comes from the wrong side.
The flues also share a crown and often a cap, so a repair on top has to account for all of them. On a multi-flue chimney we check each flue separately, note which appliance or fireplace it serves, and look at the masonry that separates them. Each flue gets its own findings, because one can be sound while its neighbor is not.
