Pressing a round liner oval

A rectangular clay flue can be too narrow on one side for a round liner of the size the appliance needs. Flexible stainless liner can be pressed into an oval to fit, and liner makers allow it.

The catch is area. An oval has less cross-sectional area than the round liner it was made from, and the appliance sizing was based on the round figure. So after shaping, the oval's area is worked out again and checked against the appliance collar or the fireplace opening. If the oval comes up short, the answer is a larger starting diameter or tile removal, and never a smaller flue.

When the flue is too big for the appliance

An oversized flue causes trouble too, though it shows up differently from an undersized one. Exhaust slows down in a passage much larger than the appliance's collar, loses heat to the extra surface, and condenses. The result is heavy creosote with wood and damp, acidic deposits with gas.

Liner makers set a floor and a ceiling for liner size: no smaller than the appliance collar, and in one maker's instructions no more than three times its area for solid fuel. A liner inside the oversized flue restores the right size without changing the masonry around it. The collar size and the liner size are shown side by side, so the fix is easy to check.

The smoke chamber below a fireplace liner

For an open fireplace, the liner's lower end starts above the throat, and the smoke chamber below still has to guide smoke from the wide firebox into the smaller liner opening. That chamber needs sound, reasonably smooth walls to do it.

Stepped brick, open joints or missing mortar in the chamber slow the smoke and let heat into the masonry, and a new liner above does not change that. The relining inspection looks at the chamber for this reason. Where the walls have failed, smoke chamber repair is listed with the liner, so the new flue gets a clean feed from below.

Does a relined flue still need its own cap?

The relined flue does not need one. The liner kit we fit includes its own cap, which fastens at the top plate. If the chimney has other flues, their caps are checked, and any change is noted.
