Inside wall or outside wall

Where the fireplace goes decides how the chimney gets out. An outside wall lets the chimney climb inside a framed chase fixed to the house, which keeps the pipe out of the rooms and attic.

On an inside wall, it passes straight up through the ceiling and attic, and each joist or rafter in the way is cut and headed off to keep the listed clearance. Firestops at each ceiling and floor

Every place a chimney passes from one floor or attic space to another is a path for fire and hot gases, so it gets closed off. On a factory-built chimney, a listed ceiling firestop spacer does it, holding the pipe centered at its clearance and closing the gap around it. On a masonry fireplace, the code requires fireblocking to the general fireblocking rules at those same points.

We fit the firestop the chimney maker lists at each ceiling it passes, and the inspector sees each one before the ceiling is finished. A firestop also keeps attic insulation and debris from falling against the pipe.

A hearth extension you can see

For a factory-built fireplace, the code sends the hearth extension to the listing and adds one visible rule: it has to be readily distinguishable from the floor around it. The reason is simple. People need to see where the fire-safe zone ends so they keep rugs and furniture off it. Listed hearth extensions are tested to UL 1618, and the manual gives the size, the materials and any thermal requirement under the surface.

We build the extension to those figures and finish its edge so the line is plain. On a raised design, the manual also says whether the extension can sit on the floor or has to be built up.

The air space around a masonry fireplace

Framing lumber keeps a 2-inch gap at the face and sides of a masonry fireplace, and a 4-inch gap behind it. That air space has to stay open, except where fireblocking closes it at floors and ceilings. The code allows combustible trim and sheathing edges to meet the side walls and hearth extension only where they sit at least 12 inches from the inside of the firebox lining.

When we frame the wall around a new masonry fireplace, those gaps are measured before the drywall goes up, because they cannot be checked afterward. Where a gap is short, the fix is framing. Insulation or caulk will not do it.

FAQ

New fireplace questions from American Beach

Do I need a permit for a new fireplace?

Yes. A permit is required for this work under the Florida Building Code, and the local building department inspects it before the walls close and again at the end. The permit and those inspections appear in the schedule on the estimate.

Can a new fireplace go on an upper floor?

Yes for a factory-built unit, because it sits on a framed floor and its chimney runs up from there, as long as the floor framing is sized for the load. A masonry fireplace needs a footing at the ground, so it has to rise from the lowest level.
