Direct-vent pipe is coaxial: an inner pipe carries exhaust out, and the space between it and the outer pipe carries fresh air in. The two streams run side by side all the way to the termination, which has openings for both. Because the incoming air surrounds the hot inner pipe, the outer wall stays cooler than a single-wall vent would, and that is part of why the listed clearances to framing are small. The pipe, its joints and its termination are one listed system from the vent maker the manual names, and parts from another system are not mixed in.

Framing the enclosure and the header

Framing starts from the manual's drawing, which gives the width, height and depth of the enclosure and the header height above the unit. The header matters because the space above a gas fireplace gets hot, and the manual sets how high framing can come. Some units have drywall support tabs on their face, and the manuals point out that those tabs are for holding the drywall edge and never for carrying framing or a header.

We build the enclosure to the drawing, square and plumb, so the unit sits where the clearances assume it does. A header set too low means reframing, so it is measured twice.

Facing materials and the heat they see

The metal face around the opening of a gas fireplace runs hot enough that the manual controls what goes over it. Only noncombustible finishes the manual accepts qualify, which rules out wood, paneling and ordinary drywall on that surface. Facing goes on with a high-temperature adhesive of the rating the manual names, and any joint sealed between the facing and the wall uses a high-temperature sealant. Wood trim and combustible board stay outside the zone the drawing marks.

Choosing a facing that meets those rules before it is bought avoids tearing it out after the inspection. Metal trim kits from the maker can frame it.
