Above walks, drives and the ground

A termination has to sit high enough above the ground to stay clear of plants, debris and anything stacked against the wall, and the manual gives a minimum height above grade. Where the termination sits over a paved walkway or driveway between two houses, the clearance table drawn from NFPA 54 sets a much greater height, because people pass close to it. We check what is below the chosen spot, including walks, drives, steps and patios, and move the termination if the height cannot be met on that stretch of wall. Mulch beds that build up over the years reduce the height, so we leave some margin.

Wiring before the wall is closed

Remote receiver, wall switch and blower wiring are run before the finish goes on, as the manuals ask, because running it afterward means cutting into the new wall. A millivolt wall switch needs its own low-voltage wire to the valve, sized and limited in length as the manual shows.

A blower or an electronic-ignition unit needs an outlet in the location the manual gives, added by an electrician. We rough in the low-voltage wiring during framing and confirm the outlet is in place before the drywall goes up. The wire runs are labeled at both ends for whoever services the unit later.

Choosing termination parts near salt spray

Salt spray speeds up corrosion of exposed steel, and a new vent termination spends its life outdoors. Near the coast, we look at what the vent maker offers for the termination, its trim and its fasteners, including stainless or coated options where the maker lists them, and use those parts on the exterior. The termination is placed where it can be reached for rinsing and inspection, and the manual's clearances still govern its spot. The corrosion-resistant parts chosen are recorded, so they can be matched if anything is replaced later. Rinsing the cap with fresh water now and then slows the salt down.
