Clearing it is the first step and sometimes stops a leak on its own. A wide chimney that keeps collecting debris may need a cricket, a saddle-shaped framed section behind it that sheds water to both sides, and the building code requires one above a certain width. When a sealer makes the leak worse

Film-forming sealers and some paints seal the face of the brick so well that moisture already inside cannot get out. Water still enters through cracks in the crown or open joints, and now it is trapped. It pushes against the coating from inside, blisters it, and can pop the faces off the brick.

Before the water test

Will the water test make my leak worse?

The test puts water where rain already goes, in controlled amounts, and we stop a zone as soon as water shows inside. We protect the area below the leak with towels or a tray. Any water that comes in is much less than a storm would bring.
