Burner ports and ember material

The burner is a pan or tube with rows of small ports, and the flame pattern depends on every one of them. Dust, fallen ember material and bits of broken log block ports and make the flame lopsided or uneven. Ember material is its own part: the manual says what kind, how much and where it goes, for example a thin layer over a specific area. Too much of it over the ports smothers the flame and can cause sooting. On service we lift the logs, vacuum the burner, clear the ports and relay the embers as the manual shows.

Leaks inside a direct-vent run

Pipe inside a pipe is how a direct-vent run is built, with exhaust in the middle and intake air around it. If a joint in the inner pipe separates, exhaust leaks into the intake and the burner starts breathing its own combustion products, which can make the flame and the pilot go out while the unit is running. The maker's troubleshooting chart lists an inner pipe leak for exactly that symptom, along with a horizontal run pitched the wrong way.

We check the joints we can reach, the pitch of horizontal sections, and the collar connections at the unit. Joints hidden in walls are checked where the manual gives access.

Termination hardware near salt spray

Salt spray corrodes steel faster than inland air does, and a gas fireplace's vent termination sits outside in whatever the wind carries. On a vent cap, rust shows first at fasteners, screen mesh and cut edges, and a screen that corrodes shut restricts both exhaust and intake on a direct-vent unit. Close to the coast, we look at the termination cap, its screen and its fasteners closely on each service and note early corrosion before it spreads. Replacement caps come from the vent maker's list for that system, including any corrosion-resistant option the maker offers. Stainless fasteners are used where the maker's list offers them.
