A crack running up a flue tile, or a corner broken away, points to heat that rose faster than the tile could take, such as a chimney fire or a very hot fire lit in a cold flue. Panels that have crumbled at the edges, or that show the metal behind them, are marked urgent, since the steel shell of the firebox is not meant to take the fire directly.
