Reinforcement inside a cast crown

Concrete shrinks as it cures and moves with heat afterward, and without reinforcement those movements open cracks. BIA Technical Note 19B calls for adequate reinforcement in a cast cap to control cracking from shrinkage and thermal movement, with extra where the cap overhangs the face.

The reinforcement is placed within the thickness of the crown, clear of the brick below and the surface above, so concrete surrounds it on all sides. Where a crown will stay wet for long spells, the type of reinforcement is chosen with corrosion in mind. You are told what goes in before the pour.

Why a new crown does not go over a failed one

A thin layer of new concrete poured over a cracked mortar wash can look like a quick fix. It keeps the problems of the old top: the cracks underneath, the moisture trapped in the old material, and the missing bond break at the tile. Cracks in the old top tend to show through the new layer within a short time.

We take the failed top off and cast a full crown on sound masonry. It is more work on the day, and worth it, because an overlay that fails puts you back where you started with less to work with.

Why crowns are cast in concrete

Crowns are concrete elements, and they should be made from concrete: cement, sand and coarse aggregate in proportions made for strength and durability. Bricklaying mortar is a different material, designed to be weaker than the brick so joints fail first, which is the opposite of what a crown needs.

We use a concrete mix suited to a thin cast element with reinforcement, and we name it. Mortar washes built from leftover mortar at the end of a chimney job are one reason crowns crack early. The mix is placed in one pour so there are no cold joints across the top.

Before your crown is coated or recast

Will a new crown fix my leak?

It fixes a leak that is coming through the crown. If the water is entering at the flashing, the brick or the flue top, a new crown will not stop it, which is why we trace the entry point first.

Can a drip edge be added to my existing crown?

Not in a way that lasts. A drip edge has to be formed into the underside of an overhang, and a crown without an overhang has nowhere to put one. The fix is a new crown formed wider than the chimney.
