Cleaning an insert without pulling it

A fireplace insert can be swept where it sits when a stainless liner runs from its collar to the top of the chimney. The brush works down from the top, and the deposit falls back into the insert or into a catch at the base, where it is emptied.

NFPA 211 accepts that approach when the venting can be cleaned thoroughly in place. If the insert vents into the old flue through a short pipe, or its connection is out of sight and reach, it comes out so the smoke chamber and the connection can be cleaned and seen.
