The thermopile and the switch circuit

A thermopile is a bundle of thermocouple junctions wired together, and its larger output does more than hold the valve open: it powers the valve's main operator through the wall switch or remote receiver. That makes the switch circuit part of the fuel system. A long wire run, thin wire, a corroded terminal or a worn switch can each drop enough voltage that the burner will not come on. The maker's chart gives the readings to take at the valve terminals, with the switch open and closed, and a short jumper across the switch shows whether the switch or the wire is at fault.

What a correct pilot flame looks like

Each manual shows its pilot flame in a drawing, and the drawing matters. On a standing-pilot assembly of the kind the manuals draw, one flame wraps the tip of the thermocouple or flame sensor, another wraps the thermopile, and a third reaches toward the main burner to light it. A flame that is too small leaves the sensors cool, and one that is too large can lift or sit in the wrong place.

We compare the live flame with the drawing, clean the pilot hood and orifice if the flame is weak or yellow, and adjust the pilot where the valve provides for it. The adjustment is small and made with the unit running.

Termination hardware near salt spray

Salt spray corrodes steel faster than inland air does, and a gas fireplace's vent termination sits outside in whatever the wind carries. On a vent cap, rust shows first at fasteners, screen mesh and cut edges, and a screen that corrodes shut restricts both exhaust and intake on a direct-vent unit. Close to the coast, we look at the termination cap, its screen and its fasteners closely on each service and note early corrosion before it spreads. Replacement caps come from the vent maker's list for that system, including any corrosion-resistant option the maker offers. Stainless fasteners are used where the maker's list offers them.
