Thirty degrees and four elbows

Bending a factory-built chimney around a beam or a ridge is allowed, within limits. The code keeps every part of the assembly within 30 degrees of vertical and allows no more than four elbows in it, and the manual can set tighter limits for its own system. Each offset also needs support and a strap where the manual shows one. Those numbers shape the route more than anything else in the attic.

When a straight run is not possible, we draw the offsets first and check them against both limits before the route is priced. Fewer offsets also mean fewer joints to check later.

Firestops at each ceiling and floor

Every place a chimney passes from one floor or attic space to another is a path for fire and hot gases, so it gets closed off. On a factory-built chimney, a listed ceiling firestop spacer does it, holding the pipe centered at its clearance and closing the gap around it. On a masonry fireplace, the code requires fireblocking to the general fireblocking rules at those same points.

We fit the firestop the chimney maker lists at each ceiling it passes, and the inspector sees each one before the ceiling is finished. A firestop also keeps attic insulation and debris from falling against the pipe.

The shape of a new smoke chamber

The smoke chamber sits between the damper and the flue, and the code limits its shape. Its inside height, from the throat to the start of the flue, is no greater than the inside width of the fireplace opening. Its walls lean no more than 45 degrees from vertical when built with prefabricated linings or rolled walls, or 30 degrees when corbeled. They are at least 8 inches thick, or 6 inches with a firebrick or clay lining, and the inside is parged smooth with refractory mortar.

A chamber built to those limits carries smoke up cleanly. It is the part of a masonry build that is hardest to fix later.
