Continuous L flashing and why we prefer steps at a chimney
Section R905.2.8.3 of the Florida Building Code, Residential allows sidewall flashing on shingle roofs to be done by the step-flashing method or with a continuous L flashing, a single bent strip running the length of the wall. Both are allowed methods for a sidewall.
At a chimney, we prefer steps. The chimney and the roof move separately, and individual pieces let the roof move without dragging the flashing with it. A single strip fastened along its length has to be sealed at every shingle, and it lets water that gets under one course travel the full length.
Cutting a reglet for the counter flashing
A reglet is a slot sawn into a mortar joint to take the top edge of the counter flashing. It is cut along the joint rather than into the face of the brick, deep enough to hold the bent edge of the metal firmly, and cleaned of dust so sealant can grip the sides.
The counter flashing's top edge is bent to fit into the slot, pushed in, wedged tight and sealed. On a sloped roof the counter flashing is stepped, each piece set into the joint at its own height, so it follows the slope while each top edge stays in a horizontal joint.
Stainless steel flashing
Stainless steel resists corrosion and heat and does not stain the masonry below it. The Brick Industry Association recommends Type 304 stainless for chimney flashing, ordered to ASTM A240, and describes it as a good water barrier with excellent chemical resistance.
It is stiffer than copper, so bending it neatly into steps, hems and tabs takes more care, and soldering it needs the right flux. Around masonry it is a strong all-round choice.
