Pressing a round liner oval
A rectangular clay flue can be too narrow on one side for a round liner of the size the appliance needs. Flexible stainless liner can be pressed into an oval to fit, and liner makers allow it.
The catch is area. An oval has less cross-sectional area than the round liner it was made from, and the appliance sizing was based on the round figure. So after shaping, the oval's area is worked out again and checked against the appliance collar or the fireplace opening. Matching the alloy to the fuel
Stainless liners are not all the same steel. Makers list 316-type alloys for wood, coal, oil and standard-efficiency gas appliances, and offer tougher, more acid-resistant alloys for high-efficiency gas appliances, which run cool enough to leave acidic condensate in the flue.
The fuel and the appliance's category decide which alloy its listing allows. A liner fitted for a wood stove and later asked to carry a high-efficiency gas appliance may not be listed for that job, which is why a fuel change is a reason to check the liner before relying on it. Old tile standing above the crown
Old clay tile can stand a few inches proud of the crown. If it is sound, one liner maker's instructions allow it to stay, with the top plate and cap fitted over it.
If it is cracked or crumbling, it is cut back flush with the crown using a chisel, taking care that pieces do not fall down the flue, and any that do are removed from the bottom. The cut surface and any cracks are filled with mortar so the top plate sits flat and seals against the masonry. The top is checked for level before the plate is set, whichever way it went.
