The hearth extension is the noncombustible floor in front of and beside the fireplace, and its size follows the size of the opening. For an opening smaller than 6 square feet the code asks for 16 inches in front and 8 inches to each side; at 6 square feet or more, 20 inches in front and 12 to each side (FBC R1001.10).
The inspection measures the opening and the extension, and checks the extension for cracks or loose tiles that could let an ember reach wood below. A short extension is recorded with the amount it falls short by. Raised hearths are measured the same way, at floor level in front.
The thimble in the chimney wall
A thimble is the sleeve a connector passes through to enter the chimney from the side. The code wants it made of fireclay, rigid refractory or metal, and fitted so the connector cannot pull out of the inlet or reach past the inner face of the liner (FBC R1003.16).
The inspection checks that the thimble is intact, tight in the masonry and at the right height for the stove. Cracked or crumbling thimbles, or a connector poking into the flue where it catches deposit, are noted, along with how close the thimble sits to any wood framing. An open thimble with no connector in it is noted too, since it lets room air into the flue.
Flue size measured against the fireplace opening
An open masonry fireplace needs a flue big enough to carry away what its opening produces. The code ties the two together: a round flue at least one-twelfth the area of the opening, a square one at least one-tenth (FBC R1003.15.1). The inspection measures the opening's width and height and the flue's inside dimensions, then does the arithmetic.
A flue that comes up short explains smoke rolling out at the top of the opening. One far too large for a stove later set into the fireplace explains heavy deposit. Either result goes into the findings with the numbers. The measurements are kept, so any later liner estimate starts from them.
