The spark electrode and its cable

The spark that lights a pilot jumps a small gap between an electrode and a grounded point, and the gap is set by the maker. Too wide, and the spark weakens or jumps somewhere else. A cracked ceramic around the electrode lets the spark leak to the metal body, which shows as clicking with no light. The ignition cable runs close to hot parts, and a cable that has melted or buckled from heat is replaced and shielded where the manual says.

The gap, the ceramic and the cable all get checked before the module is blamed. Each of those has its own part number.

Pressure at the test ports

A fireplace gas valve carries two small test ports, one on the inlet side and one on the outlet or manifold side. A manometer on each tells whether gas is arriving at the pressure the rating plate calls for and leaving at the pressure the burner needs. Low inlet pressure is a supply problem outside the appliance. Correct inlet with low manifold pressure points into the valve or its regulator. Readings are taken with the burner lit, since a supply that looks fine at rest can sag under load, and each port is resealed and leak-checked after.

Natural gas and propane are not interchangeable

The rating plate names the gas a fireplace was built for, and the orifices, the valve regulator and the pilot are sized for it. A propane unit connected to natural gas burns weak and lazy, and a natural gas unit fed propane can overfire badly. Switching fuels takes the maker's conversion kit for that model, which swaps the orifices and sets the regulator, and the kit instructions say how the unit is labeled afterward.

We confirm the gas at the plate and at the supply before any other diagnosis. An orifice drilled out by hand is not a conversion. Neither is a regulator spring from another model.
