Distance to windows and doors

The termination of a direct-vent unit has to stay a minimum distance from any window or door that can be opened, so exhaust cannot drift back inside. The distance grows with the unit's input rating in steps set by NFPA 54, and the manual's clearance table repeats them.

A permanently closed window has its own, smaller recommendation in some manuals. We measure from the edge of the termination to the nearest edge of each opening, including windows above and beside it, and mark the spot only when every distance clears. The table also covers doors, including sliding glass doors that open.

Above walks, drives and the ground

A termination has to sit high enough above the ground to stay clear of plants, debris and anything stacked against the wall, and the manual gives a minimum height above grade. Where the termination sits over a paved walkway or driveway between two houses, the clearance table drawn from NFPA 54 sets a much greater height, because people pass close to it. We check what is below the chosen spot, including walks, drives, steps and patios, and move the termination if the height cannot be met on that stretch of wall. Mulch beds that build up over the years reduce the height, so we leave some margin.

The volume rule for B-vent units

A B-vent fireplace takes its combustion air from the room, so the fuel gas code limits where it can go. In a bedroom, it is allowed only when the room has at least 50 cubic feet of volume for each 1,000 Btu per hour the unit burns, the code's standard method.

A small bedroom can fail that test with a modest unit. A direct-vent unit, which takes all its air from outside, is not held to the same volume rule when installed to its listing. We do the arithmetic from the room's measurements before recommending either. Ceiling height counts, so a tall room holds more volume than its floor area suggests.
