What the top plate does

The top plate is the part that holds the liner up. It sits on the crown around the flue opening, clamps the liner, and carries the whole weight of the liner below it, anchored to the masonry by sealant rated for heat or by masonry screws, per the kit.

Once the plate is fastened, the liner is cut flush with its collar and the cap goes on. A plate set on an uneven or cracked crown will not seal or sit square, which is why a broken top tile gets trimmed and the crown surface made good before it goes on.

The cap on a relined flue

A relined flue gets its own cap, clamped to the top plate or the liner collar. It keeps rain out of the liner, where water mixes with deposit and attacks the metal, and its screen keeps birds and animals out of a passage that is now too narrow to clear by hand.

Where the chimney had a single wide cap over several flues, the new liner cap may sit higher than the old cap allows. We check the fit and say whether the old cap is refitted, raised or replaced with an arrangement that covers every flue. The screen gets checked again on every sweep after that.

When the flue is too big for the appliance

An oversized flue causes trouble too, though it shows up differently from an undersized one. Exhaust slows down in a passage much larger than the appliance's collar, loses heat to the extra surface, and condenses. The result is heavy creosote with wood and damp, acidic deposits with gas.

Liner makers set a floor and a ceiling for liner size: no smaller than the appliance collar, and in one maker's instructions no more than three times its area for solid fuel.
