The mortar and brick fragments are kept separate from sound brick being saved for reuse. The work area on the roof is swept as it goes, since loose grit under a boot on sloped roofing is a fall risk and grinds into shingles. Nothing heavier than a bucket load travels at once, so the line and the roof edge are not overloaded.

Setting new clay tile in a rebuilt stack

When the rebuild uses clay flue tile, each section is set in medium-duty, water-insoluble refractory mortar to ASTM C199, with tight joints struck smooth on the inside so they do not catch deposit. The tile is supported on all sides.

It is not mortared solid to the brick around it. The code calls for an airspace, or insulation no thicker than the tile itself, between the tile and the inner face of the chimney wall (FBC R1003.12), so the tile can expand with heat without cracking the masonry. Each tile is checked for plumb and a clean joint before the next course of brick rises around it.

Running a liner through a rebuilt chimney

Some rebuilds leave the flue space open and line it afterward with a UL 1777 listed stainless liner, which the code accepts as a flue lining (FBC R1003.11.1). That route suits a chimney that will serve a stove or insert, since the liner is sized to the appliance's collar.

The rebuilt masonry is laid with a clear, plumb passage wide enough for the liner plus whatever insulation the listing calls for. The liner goes in once the crown has cured, and its top plate is fastened to the finished crown. Until then the open flue space is capped against rain.
