When a chase top is off, the top of that space is visible, and it is a good time to check that insulation has not slumped against the pipe and that a previous repair did not add framing too close to it.
Anything inside that clearance is pulled back or noted. The same manual calls for ceiling firestops at each floor of the chase or every 10 feet of height, and a missing one is written up for the chase repair.
