Rear vent or top vent, set before framing

Some direct-vent units ship as rear-vent models, with the pipe leaving the back of the firebox straight toward the outside wall, and can be converted to top vent for a route that rises first. The choice depends on where the termination can go. Set against an outside wall, a rear-vent unit gets the shortest possible run.

A top-vent unit set away from the wall, or one that has to climb to a roof exit, needs the vertical rise that the vent table allows. The conversion follows the manual and is done before the unit is set in its framing. The manual lists which configurations the unit allows.

A vertical termination through the roof

When the vent goes up instead of out, it climbs up past the ceiling and across the attic to a vertical cap, which stands as high above the roof as the manual requires for that roof pitch. The penetration is sealed with the roof flashing and storm collar that come in the vent kit, fitted as its instructions show. Around them, the roof covering itself may need sealing and patching, and we name the trade that does it. In the attic, the pipe keeps its listed clearance to framing and insulation, with the shield the vent maker supplies.

Framing the enclosure and the header

Framing starts from the manual's drawing, which gives the width, height and depth of the enclosure and the header height above the unit. The header matters because the space above a gas fireplace gets hot, and the manual sets how high framing can come. Some units have drywall support tabs on their face, and the manuals point out that those tabs are for holding the drywall edge and never for carrying framing or a header.

We build the enclosure to the drawing, square and plumb, so the unit sits where the clearances assume it does. A header set too low means reframing, so it is measured twice.
