The Florida bat dates
Florida handles bats under rule 68A-9.010, the state wildlife commission's rule on nuisance animals. It prohibits exclusion devices, and anything else placed at a roost that could stop bats getting in or out, from April 16 through August 14. Those months cover the maternity season, when young bats cannot yet fly and would be sealed in.
Exclusion becomes legal again on August 15 and stays legal through April 15. Apart from exclusion, a registered repellent, or repairs that follow a completed exclusion, the rule gives no way to take bats as nuisance animals, so trapping and killing are off the table. The opening is sealed with a panel or plastic sheeting taped to the fireplace face, with the vacuum hose passing through it. The hearth and the floor in front are covered, and furniture nearby is moved or draped.
With the room sealed off, the flue is brushed from above or below, and the debris drops to where the vacuum collects it. The seal comes down last, after the firebox and smoke shelf are cleaned, so you get the room back as it was.
