Hemmed edges on the flashing
The exposed lower edge of counter flashing is folded back on itself, a hem, rather than left as a raw cut edge. The hem stiffens the metal so it lies flat against the base flashing instead of curling, and it gives water a clean edge to drip from.
A raw edge can ripple, lift in wind and let water wick back underneath. On aprons and counter flashing we hem the exposed edges where the metal allows it. It is a small thing that makes the joint last longer and look finished from the ground. Hems are formed on the bench before the piece goes up.
Why aluminum stays away from fresh mortar
Aluminum flashing is light, cheap and easy to bend, and it turns up on chimneys for those reasons. The problem is contact with masonry. According to the Brick Industry Association, fresh mortar is alkaline enough to corrode aluminum, so aluminum is not a flashing metal for brickwork.
Aluminum set into a reglet with fresh mortar, or lying in constant contact with wet brick, corrodes where it touches. We use copper or stainless steel for anything set into the masonry, and where a roof requires aluminum for compatibility, the detail keeps the aluminum away from the brick with a separate counter flashing.
Copper flashing and the staining below it
Copper is a durable flashing metal for chimneys. It handles the temperatures, it can be set into fresh mortar, and it solders into clean corners. The Brick Industry Association lists one drawback: runoff from copper can stain the crown or the brick below it.
That stain is a greenish or dark streak, and on light brick or stucco it can be visible from the ground. Where staining would be a problem, stainless steel is the alternative. If you choose copper, that possibility is mentioned up front, so staining does not come as a surprise a year later. Copper also darkens as it weathers, which some owners like and some do not.
