An ignition module gives the pilot a set number of tries, or a set time, to light and prove its flame. If it fails, the module shuts the gas off and some models lock out until they are reset by switching power off and on, as the manual describes. Pipe inside a pipe is how a direct-vent run is built, with exhaust in the middle and intake air around it. If a joint in the inner pipe separates, exhaust leaks into the intake and the burner starts breathing its own combustion products, which can make the flame and the pilot go out while the unit is running.
