Stepped counter flashing along a sloped roof

Mortar joints run level, but a roof runs at a slope. Counter flashing along the side of a chimney has to bridge that difference, and it is cut in steps to do that: each piece set into a level joint, with its lower edge angled to follow the roof and lap over the step flashing beneath it.

Each step laps the one below it so water runs from piece to piece down the slope. The laps between steps have to point downhill. A counter flashing cut as one long diagonal strip, set into the brick at an angle across several courses, leaves open slots through the face of the brick where water can enter.

Through-wall flashing when brick is being relaid

The detail the Brick Industry Association draws for chimneys runs the counter flashing through the full thickness of the chimney wall and turns it up into the air space inside, so water soaking into the brick above is collected and sent back out. Its guidance says flashing that stops short of going through a wythe is little better than none.

That detail can only be built while the brick is being laid. When a chimney is being rebuilt above the roof, it is the better option and we plan it into the rebuild. On an existing chimney that is staying, a reglet in a mortar joint is the practical repair.

Why base flashing is fastened to the roof deck

Base pieces, meaning the step flashing and the back pan, are fastened to the roof deck, near their top edges where the roofing above covers the fastener. They are not nailed into the brick. The roof deck and the chimney move independently, and flashing fixed to both tears or pulls loose.

Counter flashing, on the other hand, is held by the chimney: wedged and sealed in its reglet. The two layers meet only where the counter flashing laps over the base flashing, which leaves them free to slide. Flashing we find nailed into mortar joints or through the brick face is replaced, and the holes are filled.
